Mt. Vernon-Be Aware of Circulating EV-D68 Virus During Cold/Flu Season

The Jefferson County Health Department would like to remind everyone that with cold and flu season approaching, there is another respiratory illness, the Enterovirus D68 (EV-D68) that has been causing illness in children.  The Illinois Department of Public Health sent a health alert message September 5th to medical providers and public health officials throughout the state, alerting them to the occurrence of these illnesses.

EV-D68 has been associated almost exclusively with respiratory disease, which can range from mild to severe. However, other symptoms of illness might also occur. As of this date, no cases have been reported in Jefferson County.

There are no anti-viral medications currently available to treat EV-D68 infections.  Like other enteroviruses, it appears to spread through close contact with infected people.

You can take precautions to reduce the risk of acquiring EV-D68 by the same measures you take during cold and flu season every year.

*Wash hands often with soap and water for 20 seconds, especially after changing diapers.

* Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands.

*Avoid kissing, hugging, and sharing cups or eating utensils with people
who are sick.

*Disinfect frequently touched surfaces, such as toys and doorknobs,
especially if someone is sick.

*Stay at home when feeling sick and consult your health care provider.
